A common thought to achieve successful weight loss is to 'hit the gym'--engage in erroneous exercise. However, diet is at times neglected. If you've ever attempted to lose weight then in all honesty who hasn't considered 'if i have this piece of cake today, i'll work it off by running more tomorrow'. A guilty disposition and a step back in truly achieving the weight loss results one would desire. There is evidence that diet matters more than exercise. Alice G. Watson (Forbes) has a published article insisting that we 'reboot' our understanding of health. Although regular exercise has benefits to our health, it in itself will not help one lose weight if they continue to consume the fats and carbohydrates that they do. Weight gain and obesity prevalence has increased greatly in recent times, while prevalence of exercise among general population has stayed relatively the same for the last 30 years. Another issue is that individuals of normal weight, eating unhealthy will still have metabolic markers for chronic illnesses. In Watson's study (2015), she found that up to 40% of individuals with normal body mass index would harbor metabolic markers including hypertension, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease.

Mindfulness is needed by consumers as they indulge in their next sugary item. They should read between the celebrity endorsed lines and understand that the key to weight loss is restriction of unhealthy foods. An extra hour at the gym will do little to correct the damage from the extra piece of cake, the night before.
